Tumbling Tumbleweeds. It's not uncommon to see tumbleweed rolling on the ground out here, but a recent windstorm intensified the amount and size of these lonely weeds. Pictured below are just two of the dozens of tumbleweeds caught along fences throughout our neighborhood.

Enjoy.

Three Point Mountain

Standing at the bottom of the three point mountain, wearing my backpack for the first time outside of the store, I felt as close to a weakling as I am ever likely to feel. The sun seemed near enough to singe my hair. Three miles, its just three miles is all I kept telling myself. And then we began our hike. The trail we were hiking is considered to be somewhat easy but more difficult than walking on a nice groomed trail. We had to do some hiking on scree (an accumulation of loose stones or rocky debris lying on a slope) but we never had to put our hands down to keep our balance.

Up the first steep climb, I had to stop, catch my breath, and begin again. That system was repeated several times throughout the entire hike. And, I had to keep telling myself that Jake has it easier because he is lighter, smaller, bred for herding in mountains, and not carrying a pack. Otherwise, how else would I explain his lightening fast speed up all the climbs?

As we continued our slow climb, I couldn’t help to notice how empty and lifeless the mountain was – there were no birds in the sky (no wait, we saw two for a brief moment), no little creatures roaming in the weeds, no rattlesnakes, no mountain lions, nothing but ants.

The views at the top of the peaks were beautiful. Downtown Boise could be seen in the distance, lesser peaks laid beneath us, snow covered Trinity Mountains loomed to the West, and clouds sat above on our shoulders. In two short hours, we had climbed all three peaks and traipsed along the hillsides successfully back to the car. The short, albeit steep, hike defiantly whet my appetite for more hiking and backpacking in the near future.

I would love to share photos with you, but only Brian and I can revisit those remarkable images in our daydreams. You see, we had my camera and we took a lot of great photos, but we were missing one vital piece – the memory card. We do have this image from another hiker, but keep in mind all the snow was melted when we were hiking, so you need to picture tumble weeds, sage bushes, and lots and lots of dirt, gravel, and stones.

Waiting excitedly until our next adventure (with our memory card).

Just Trying to Survive

I am just a girl trying to survive on a bike. I wont have the fastest time, longest distance, or fastest speed, but I do what I can and maybe try a little that I can't do so well. On our third day of riding I decided to climb a long and steep hill. With SUVs, cars, truckers and dump trucks whizzing by at 70+ mph I slowly spun my way to the top of the hill. Sadly, every time I looked at my cateye I realized I hadn't gone very far and I was only going 4 mph. But hey, I made it. And, when it was time to turn around and go flying down my well deserved climb - I freaked out and kept breaking for most of the way down. Something about the fear of hitting a pothole, flying off my bike, and getting hit by a speeding dump truck just didn't sound appealing at the time. However, on a smaller hill I was able to get a top speed of 26 mph. Smokin. At the end of the ride, we went 14 miles in 1 hour 16 mins with an average speed of 11 mph and a top speed of 26 mph. And, more importantly, I survived the climb.

Below are some pictures from our ride:

#1: That's me biking beside homes that I will never own (even if you and I win the lottery)

It's that time of the year

Brian and I had a busy weekend of running errands, taking Jake to the dog park a few times, laundry, cleaning, cooking, weeding the front yard, and BIKING. Yes, I am very excited to report it finally warmed up enough for me to get out there and ride. The first day I was scared to bike too far from home and our cateyes (a cycling computer that tracks time, distance, and speed) weren't working so we guess we did a wimpy 8 miles or so. The second day we got our cateyes working and we did 12 miles (still not that great). I am excited about the coming months and will be sure to pack in as many miles as my poor legs can take because nothing feels better than feeling a good burn in your legs.

Every picture tells a story

I snuck outside this afternoon and found Jake sleeping in the shade. Sadly, my footsteps woke him, and I was only able to capture his "sleepy daze." Enjoy.

Photography 101

As most of you know, I am trying to become a fancy dancy photographer - which is much harder than it sounds. I was not one of the "lucky" ones that took photography in school, so my learning is coming from my mom, Brian, and photography books and websites. So needless to say, I am making slow progress. Well anyway, recently I have been working on macro shots (see photos) and I thought I would share. Enjoy!
